Hope Springs (2012): Meryl Streep

Not Meryl's best performance. I kept thinking "That's Meryl Streep trying to act awkward", and that's never a good sign. She did the awkward thing nicely, I have to admit, but the character was just too uncomfortable to watch. A woman so completely emotionally and sexually repressed in this day and age is a sad and, quite frankly, strange sight.

I'm sure there are plenty of people like that, but should we then be surprised that her husband has lost interest in her? The character completely lacked personality. Cooking eggs with bacon every morning and giggling nervously is not it, I'm sorry. Not Meryl's fault probably, but even if the script failed in that regard, she is skilled and experience enough to make us care for that poor woman. Well, I didn't.

That role aside, Meryl has been in top shape lately, as ever. Another deserved Oscar in 2011 for The Iron Lady, and she was also great in Julie & Julia and Doubt. Not always lucky with scripts - movies like It's Complicated or Lions for Lambs were mediocre at best, but her performance consistently top level. Most movies raked in decent money, including one huge international hit in Mamma Mia! Meryl Streep is a full package, and she doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

My favorite performance of hers? The Devil Wears Prada, hands down :)

Current grade: 99. She deserves to be at the very top. If Hope Springs failed to make money though, the grade would have been lower. I'll be watching closely :)
